Roman roads in Serbia
Serbia sits at the junction of two Roman arteries: the Danube frontier road, and the Via Militaris running south-east from Singidunum at Belgrade toward Byzantium. The stretch through the Iron Gates gorge was cut into the rock face and carried on timber galleries, one of the most ambitious pieces of road engineering the Romans attempted anywhere.
What to see
Felix Romuliana at Gamzigrad, the fortified palace Galerius built in his birthplace, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a reminder that four Roman emperors were born in what is now Serbia. Along the Danube, Trajan's Table is cut into the rock of the Iron Gates gorge, marking the road his engineers carried on timber galleries above the river.
