Roman roads in Austria
Roman Austria spanned Noricum, valued for its iron, and the western part of Pannonia. The Via Claudia Augusta crossed the Alps from Italy to the Danube, and the Danube road linked the Pannonian legionary fortresses at Vindobona, modern Vienna, and Carnuntum. Marcus Aurelius spent his last years on that frontier and died on it.
What to see
Carnuntum, east of Vienna, is the outstanding site: parts of the civil town have been rebuilt full-size on their own foundations, so you can walk into a heated Roman house rather than look at a floor plan. Magdalensberg in Carinthia preserves the Norican trading settlement that handled the province's iron, and the Danube limes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
