Roman roads in Albania
Albania holds the western end of the Via Egnatia, which began at the Adriatic ports of Dyrrachium at Durrës and Apollonia and climbed inland toward Macedonia. Travellers from Italy crossed the strait from Brundisium and picked up the road here, which makes this coast the hinge between the Roman west and the Greek east.
What to see
Butrint, in the far south, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a Greek theatre, Roman houses and a baptistery mosaic, set in a lagoon landscape that has kept it isolated. Apollonia and Durrës hold the western terminals of the Via Egnatia; Durrës has the largest amphitheatre in the Balkans, found in the 1960s under a hillside of houses.
