Roman roads in Italy
This is where the system began. The Via Appia, begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus, is the road all the others descend from, and the Romans called it regina viarum, the queen of roads. The Via Aurelia and the Via Flaminia followed it out of the city, until the proverb about all roads leading to Rome was a matter of engineering rather than metaphor. Not all of them did: the Via Postumia of 148 BC runs clean across the north from Genoa to Aquileia without touching the capital.
