Icknield Way
The Icknield Way is older than the Romans. A prehistoric trackway running along the chalk from East Anglia to the Wessex downs, it was the principal route between Norfolk and the south coast for many centuries before the conquest. The Romans paved sections of it where the line suited their road network, particularly between Ivinghoe and Tring, but they never built it whole. The medieval name is from the Iceni tribe of Norfolk and Suffolk, whose territory the eastern end crossed. Today it is one of the oldest continuously used paths in Europe, a designated National Trail from Norfolk to Ivinghoe Beacon in the Chilterns.
